Manipal Medical College

One of the reputed and premier medical colleges of Pokhara is Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MCOMS). It is the first private medical college of Nepal associated with Manipal Teaching Hospital that was established in 1994 AD.

MBBS PCL BSC and MMC courses

The programs provided in MCOMS are MBBS, B.Sc. Nursing and Post Graduate programs. Approximately 150 students are admitted each year for the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Sciences) program. 20% of scholarship seats are available and there are more than 145 experienced faculties as well.

MBBS program in MCOMS is four and a half years course along with one year of compulsory residential rotating internship. MBBS takes 5 and half years in total. The 4 and half years course is divided into 9 semesters of 6 months each. The medium of instruction is English.

About 1700 students have passed from MCOMS until now and have proven to be qualified resources. The first 4 semesters in the MBBS program covers preclinical sciences which set the foundation for the students to practice in a clinical setting. A student should pass all the preclinical subjects before he can continue to the clinical sciences (Semester V to IX). The evaluation of students are done continuously through different exams, seminars and problem-based learning sessions.

Post-graduate courses

MCOMS started Post Graduate Programs and the School of Nursing & Allied Health programmes in the year 2000. These courses are recognised by the Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Nursing Council and Nepal Health Professional Council, respectively. B.Sc. Nursing course in MCOMS was started in August 2009.

The program is 4 years and 20 seats are available for the admission each year. Scholarships are also available in B.Sc. Nursing course. For the selection, one must go through the entrance examination of KU. Nursing students are provided with a good foundation of theoretical knowledge.

They are also exposed to clinical settings and provide direct care to the patients.  Nursing students also conduct the survey, home visits, physical examination, nutritional assessment, health action presentation, formal and informal health teaching, mass health exhibition and referral services, School health programme, home delivery, sanitation programmes etc in community settings which will help the rural people there to be aware of their health.

Manipal Teaching Hospital where the clinical teaching is conducted is 700 bedded. It includes a big and spacious library, student’s classroom, canteen and auditorium along with the inpatient and outpatient departments.

Lumbini Medical College

MBBS BDS and KIST courses

The programs provided by KMCTH are MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) and BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery). It is affiliated to Tribhuvan University (TU), Institute of Medicine (IOM) for the course of MBBS since 2008 and for the BDS program since the year 2011.

Both the courses are recognised by Nepal Medical Council. To be able to apply for these programs, the candidate should have passed I.Sc. Examination or it’s equivalent with Biology, Physics, Chemistry and English as their major subjects and gained at least 50% in all these subjects separately. These candidates have to undergo an entrance examination for the selection process.

The course of MBBS follows the curriculum of TUIOM. The course has been presented in a structured mannered so that the curriculum can be implemented in the real-time practice. The duration of the course is 5 and a half years. The curriculum consists of the basic medical sciences subjects and clinical subjects.

After finishing the final examination, 1 year of internship is mandatory for every graduate. The community medicine education is included in the curriculum from the first year to the last. The duration of the BDS course is 4 and a half years. There are 3 phases in the curriculum of BDS. In eh 1st phase (2 years), basic medical science subjects are taught. In the 2nd phase (1 year), major clinical postings and teachings take place and in the 3rd phase (1 and half year) postings in different other departments take place. The internship of 1 year which is compulsory begins after completing and qualifying the final examination.
