Manipal Medical College
One of the reputed and premier medical colleges of Pokhara is Manipal College of Medical Sciences (MCOMS). It is the first private medical college of Nepal associated with Manipal Teaching Hospital that was established in 1994 AD.
It is affiliated to Kathmandu University. It is driven by the motto “Inspired by life”. There are two locations of Manipal Medical College in Pokhara each with their own functions. One is in the Deep Heights where the 1st and 2nd-year courses are taught and contains the administrative block.

MBBS PCL BSC and MMC courses
The programs provided in MCOMS are MBBS, B.Sc. Nursing and Post Graduate programs. Approximately 150 students are admitted each year for the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Sciences) program. 20% of scholarship seats are available and there are more than 145 experienced faculties as well.
MBBS program in MCOMS is four and a half years course along with one year of compulsory residential rotating internship. MBBS takes 5 and half years in total. The 4 and half years course is divided into 9 semesters of 6 months each. The medium of instruction is English.
About 1700 students have passed from MCOMS until now and have proven to be qualified resources. The first 4 semesters in the MBBS program covers preclinical sciences which set the foundation for the students to practice in a clinical setting. A student should pass all the preclinical subjects before he can continue to the clinical sciences (Semester V to IX). The evaluation of students are done continuously through different exams, seminars and problem-based learning sessions.
MCOMS started Post Graduate Programs and the School of Nursing & Allied Health programmes in the year 2000. These courses are recognised by the Nepal Medical Council, Nepal Nursing Council and Nepal Health Professional Council, respectively. B.Sc. Nursing course in MCOMS was started in August 2009.
The program is 4 years and 20 seats are available for the admission each year. Scholarships are also available in B.Sc. Nursing course. For the selection, one must go through the entrance examination of KU. Nursing students are provided with a good foundation of theoretical knowledge.
They are also exposed to clinical settings and provide direct care to the patients. Nursing students also conduct the survey, home visits, physical examination, nutritional assessment, health action presentation, formal and informal health teaching, mass health exhibition and referral services, School health programme, home delivery, sanitation programmes etc in community settings which will help the rural people there to be aware of their health.
Manipal Teaching Hospital where the clinical teaching is conducted is 700 bedded. It includes a big and spacious library, student’s classroom, canteen and auditorium along with the inpatient and outpatient departments.
Treatment is provided at a very reasonable cost to the patients as it has set on the mission of “Health for all”. There is also a Poor Patients Fund (PPF) which is managed by the students and provides free treatment to the patients who cannot afford for themselves.
Lumbini Medical College
Most of the medical colleges and infrastructures have mainly been centred in the Kathmandu valley of Nepal. So, students from other districts and parts of the country have to go to the valleys compulsorily for pursuing higher education. This problem was realised by people in different parts of the country as well.
The realisation of a need of the medical college was also felt in the western hilly region and thus in the year 2063 BS, the concept of Lumbini Medical College & Teaching Hospital Pvt. Ltd. emerged and immediately a 100 bedded hospital was established in Lumbini, Palpa. This happened with the permission from the Ministry of Health and Population of the country. The hospital has been upgraded to a 600 bedded hospital at present.

MBBS PCL BSC and LMC courses
LMC provides undergraduate programs to the students. Programs available in LMC are MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery), PCL (Proficiency in Certificate Level) Nursing, and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. in Nursing). MBBS includes the core curriculum of four and a half years.
The program consists of subjects like basic medical sciences, clinical subjects, community medicine and health informatics. It also includes community-based education with exposure in the real communities in the country. In the fifth academic year, there is an elective study. The program also includes 1 year of mandatory rotating internship.
The college provides courses in nursing which include two programs that are PCL Nursing and B.Sc. Nursing. PCL Nursing is a course is of 3 years duration and a student who has passed in SLC examination is eligible to apply for this course. B.Sc. Nursing course is of 4 years duration and one has to pass I.Sc level in the Science stream that includes the subjects i.e. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
The clinical education to build the practical skills of the students is practised in the Lumbini Medical College Teaching Hospital which is a 600 bedded hospital, under the supervision and guidance of an experienced supervisor. The hospital provides both the outpatient and inpatient services to the public and the services are available in a variety of specialities.
KIST Medical College
Established in the year 2006 AD, KIST Medical College (KISTMC) is located in a serene environment in Imadol, Patan, Nepal away from the razzmatazz of the city. MBBS BDS and KIST courses
The programs provided by KMCTH are MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) and BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery). It is affiliated to Tribhuvan University (TU), Institute of Medicine (IOM) for the course of MBBS since 2008 and for the BDS program since the year 2011.
Both the courses are recognised by Nepal Medical Council. To be able to apply for these programs, the candidate should have passed I.Sc. Examination or it’s equivalent with Biology, Physics, Chemistry and English as their major subjects and gained at least 50% in all these subjects separately. These candidates have to undergo an entrance examination for the selection process.
The course of MBBS follows the curriculum of TUIOM. The course has been presented in a structured mannered so that the curriculum can be implemented in the real-time practice. The duration of the course is 5 and a half years. The curriculum consists of the basic medical sciences subjects and clinical subjects.
After finishing the final examination, 1 year of internship is mandatory for every graduate. The community medicine education is included in the curriculum from the first year to the last. The duration of the BDS course is 4 and a half years. There are 3 phases in the curriculum of BDS. In eh 1st phase (2 years), basic medical science subjects are taught. In the 2nd phase (1 year), major clinical postings and teachings take place and in the 3rd phase (1 and half year) postings in different other departments take place. The internship of 1 year which is compulsory begins after completing and qualifying the final examination.
The college has all the basic infrastructures like a lecture hall with audio-visual aid, experienced faculties for the supervision and guidance of the students in both the programs, practical halls with the necessary equipment and instruments and everything needed to develop a student. There are regular assessments to evaluate the performance of the students. Various seminars and problem-based learning sessions are also conducted.

Gandaki Medical College
Among the medical colleges of Nepal, Gandaki Medical College located in Lekhnath-2, Pokhara, Kaski is a reputed name. Gandaki Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Centre (GMCTHRC) P. The requirement is that they should have been enlisted in the merit list of IOM entrance exam beforehand. Each year, there is a room for 75 students to be selected for the MBBS program in the month of November/ December. Presently, the other programs that are being conducted in GMCTHRC are BSc.
