Maiti Nepal is a non-profit organization in Nepal. This organization gives a whole new level of definition of feminism. Organization such as Maiti Nepal plays a very important role in country such as Nepal which since past long decades of history has been a male dominant country. This organization not only educates but also is responsible for taking initiative in feminist acts. The meaning that is behind the name of this organization is very deep and meaningful.
The word “Maiti” in Nepali is said to be the place where the women before marrying lived with her parents. In Nepali culture, a women once is married, she will now be obliged to leave her own family and belong to her new family that is her husband’s family. After marriage, she is now a part of her husband’s family and will no longer have any right towards her parents or their property. This organization is named as “Maiti” as it is said be home of all the girls, women or children who are not accepted to their family or society to symbolize the love and affection that any girl would receive in their home where her parents gave her birth in.
This organization has established in 1933 and the founder of Maiti Nepal was Anuradha Koirala. Her heartbreaking relationship with her husband is what that created this organization. Anuradha was given birth by Colonel Pratap Singh Gurung and Laxmi Gurung in 1949. She then completed her education at convent school in Kalimpong. She was married to Dinesh Prasad Koirala. She was the victim of abuse and violence which she suffered for many years. It was so extreme that it leaded her to have three miscarriages. After that she decided to establish this organization with the aim of providing service for all women and children who has suffered the same way as she did in pass, if not worse. She set up transit homes, academic and medical central to support all the women and children in the country who have nowhere to go, where for them there was no such thing as they would call as “home”.

Maiti Nepal is an organization that aims to protect women and children from crimes such as domestic violence, trafficking for flesh trade, child prostitution, child labor and various forms of abuse, exploitation and torture. The group of socially committed professionals like teachers, journalists and social workers came together and held hand to form this organization to protect and help women an d children. For present, the main focus is on preventing trafficking for forced prostitution, rescuing victims the flesh trade and rehabiliting them. Maiti Nepal has its’s school, medical center, rehabilitation center and other centers to help the women and children so that they have a place to live and is provided by whatever services they require. This social organization also actively works to provide justice for victimized girls and women through criminal investigation and waging legal battles against the criminals. Maiti Nepal has many branch across the country and is growing more and more day by day.
