Election Commission Nepal is one of the constitutional bodies of Nepal. It is the legal authority responsible for monitoring all the activities related to the election. It also has a function of registering parties and candidates and of reporting election outcomes. The Election Commission Nepal (ECN) was established in 1951 as one of the repercussions of 1950 revolution of Nepal. ECN is formed under the Constitution and Government of Nepal.

All three levels of an election, local, provincial and national are going to be held this year according to the government’s plans. The plan for conducting the local level elections has already been endorsed. The election is the heart of democracy. With the election, the local denizens and citizens can choose for the person who will lead their locality and the country in general.

In any election process, voters are of great significance as it is according to their vote that the election comes to a conclusion. “Voters” are the citizens who are eligible to vote in an election. To vote in an election, voters should first be registered in the voters list. “Right to vote” is one of the cornerstones of democracy. The citizens can exercise their right to vote after there is a comprehensive and inclusive voters list. Voters’ registration ensures the eligibility of the voters to vote and the quality of vote as well.

Registration of voters is another important function of the election commission. The voters’ registration in Nepal was initiated on September 15, 2010, in 43 districts. ECN launched the voters’ registration system so that the election can be a fair process exempt of any fraudulent activities. The eligible person to vote can register their name with the District Administration Office.

Criteria to vote in Nepal

There are certain criteria that a person should fulfil for registering themselves in the voters’ list. They are:

  • The person should be a Nepali citizen.
  • The person should have completed 16 years of age and acquired citizenship certificate.
  • The person should be a permanent resident of an electoral area of a VDC/municipality.

An individual who has completed 16 years of age can register in the voters’ list. However, to be able to vote, the person should have reached 18 years according to the law.

  • Go to your browser and type election.gov.np. The homepage for election commission Nepal opens. The page is in Nepali.
  • In the main menu, go to “Matadata Namawali” i.e. voters’ registration.
  • In the box at the left side, you can see “Naam darta garne prakriya” i.e. the process to register in voters’ list. Click on that, and the information regarding it will be shown to you.

How to check Voter list Nepal

If you want to check whether your name is on the voters’ list or not, follow the steps below:

  • Go to your browser and type election.gov.np. The homepage for election commission Nepal opens. The page is in Nepali.
  • In the main menu, go to “Matadata Namawali” i.e. voters’ registration.
  • Go to the link “Matadata Namawali” i.e. voter’s registration list.
  • The link opens in which you have to provide some information about yourself to see whether your name is on the voters’ list. You have to select the district, municipality/ village development committee and ward number that you provided while registering to vote.
  • Then click on submit. The list will be shown to you in which you can check for your name on the list.
