With the introduction of Embossed Number plates in Nepal, Nepal has taken a great initiative of introducing speed detection cameras across the streets. Currently, there are three speed cameras in Nepal installed in the streets of Kathmandu Valley. These cameras use ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) technology. These cameras can read the number plates of vehicles in a real-time.

Speed Cameras in Nepal

Police have enforced Traffic Violation Record Software (TVRS) in 21 districts of Nepal. This software helps to track the number plates of traffic rule violators.

TVRS Software has already been installed in Sunsari, Jhapa, Morang, Siraha, Parsa, Mahottari, Sindhuli, Kavrepalanchowk, Makawanpur, Kaski, Tanahu, Nawalparashi (East) districts, Rupandehi, Dang, Banke, Surkhet, Salyan, Dailekh, Kailali, Kanchanpur, and Doti. So, most probably, speed cameras will be introduced all over Nepal very soon.

Speed Detection Cameras in Kathmandu

Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has installed Speed detection Cameras in three places around Ring Road (Chakrapath) in Kathmandu. This camera is called Automatic with speed detection. It detects if the vehicle is at a higher speed than the limit. It automatically captures photos and records them in the system.

What information does ANPR Cameras record in Nepal?

The ANPR camera records Information about the Vehicle in the system.

  • Plate number
  • Vehicle color
  • Lane number
  • Speed of vehicle traveling.
  • Vehicle type

Violation details are also tracked on the system. In case of overspeeding, the system records the following information.

  • time of violation
  • location of violation
  • Direction East-west or West East
  • Speed
  • Vehicle type
